Club Sessions

There are three main club sessions of the week;

Tuesday: During British Summer Time, Barrel Runs take place on Tuesday nights, come and experience the pleasure & pain (plenty of it) of our Time Trial.

If that sounds a little too much, some of our recreational canoeists just go for a steady paddle.

Barrel Runs – Starts are in reverse ranking order (i.e. slowest first) and start intervals are normally 30secs, first paddler starts at 6.30pm. The Course is a downstream start by the clubhouse steps, anticlockwise turn around the boats moored above the weir, and an upstream finish opposite the clubhouse. Paddlers can do up to three timed runs and the best time counts for points. All times are recorded and the best eight results are taken into account in each of the four categories – U18 Girls, U18 Boys, Ladies, Men.

At the end of the season prizes are given for Time Trials and Barrel Runs, these are presented at the awards evening.

Thursday:  Those who are free on a Thursday Morning (arrive 9:30 for a 10:00am start) take an upstream paddle for as far as the weather energy levels permits.  They usually do a 6 or 8 mile steady paddle which varies weekly, and may well be followed by a brew and a biscuit.

Friday: Family Fun Night is run from the Dinghy Park a little further down Sandy Lane.  This session is geared around new paddlers, and those wanting to try different craft.  Let us know if you would like to try paddling a river racer, or marathon boat, polish up your open canoe skiils, or just get a feel for paddling on the Dee.

Sunday: Long Steady Paddle 10.00.  Join in with a group that paddle at your speed, or try to keep up with some of the faster paddlers.

Hare ‘n Hound Races: We have 10 of these races each year, 1 per month starting on New Years Day! They are mainly on Sundays but during race season they take place on Thursday nights. It is a Handicapped race for all abilities juniors and categories 10 – 7 do the 5km race TT1, whilst the categories 6 – 1 do the 8km race TT2. They are a great stepping stone to racing and we encourage paddlers to join in. They start at the Road Bridge, so we have a very social warm up before we start, and serve soup in the club house afterwards. We have 3 trophies to present at the end of the year, ‘The Nut Brown Hare’ – ‘The Ashley Hound’ – ‘The Ashley Hares K2’

Please note if you are a newcomer Winter (Oct – Feb/Mar) is not a good time to start canoeing for the first time and we don’t encourage complete novices to get on the water at this time – particularly in the week when it is also dark. But Sundays are good night to come along and get to know people and have a chat about canoeing.

We run beginners courses during Spring and Summer for more information on these go to the Getting Started Page.

The more serious paddlers are down at 6:30 PM every night of the week throughout the year and at week-ends when competitions permit. However they are usually pretty focused on their own training, but will join in on our Tuesday and Thursday sessions.
