Sailing FAQs

We’re generally open most Sundays 9.30am-2.30pm throughout the year and Tuesdays and Thursdays 7pm during the Summer. Members are free to sail at anytime (at their own risk). We also run training sessions on Thursday and Friday evenings from 7pm during May and June.

We welcome most classes. Classes of boat sailed include: Enterprise, Laser , Laser 3000, RS 200, Wanderer, Mirror, Topper, RS Feva, and GP14 to name but a few, however, the size of the river and our dinghy park does limit sailors to smaller classes. Larger 18ft+ cruisers are impractical for obvious reasons.

Not quite yet, but we’re growing quickly.

Our compound may look full, but do we try to make room for active boats. Space is at a premium and our Achilles’ heel so please check for availability before paying for a berth. Priority will be given to active members who regularly sail.

Definately not! We are an RYA & BCU acredited amateur sports club, run on an entirely voluntary basis, supported by members’ subscriptions and their voluntary help. We do not have any paid staff.

Yes, helms sometimes need crews. Please visit the club on a Tuesdays and Sunday to find out more. Novice members can find this a great way to learn more sailing skills by crewing for an experienced helm.

Yes we do but on a limited basis. We are an RYA and BCU accredited training centre and can train to RYA level 4 standard. For Sailing we run 2 five week adult training courses in May and June and a 2 day course in September. We also run a Junior training course on Friday evenings. Places are limited so the best time to apply is early in the year. For further information please go to our Courses and Training page. Not at all, we welcome all sailors whether their interest is cruising or racing. The club does actively promote sail and Canoe racing, however, we also currently run sail cruising evenings on Thursdays during the summer, but as a member you can sail or canoe at any time at your own risk.

The club’s sailing season is currently March to December and we are trialing new February to March sessions to add to the current season format. Two Handicap races are run on Sundays starting at 10:30am and 12.am and one or two Pursuit races on Tuesdays 7.00pm and 8.00pm depending on the time of year.

Easily. Simply fill out our application form. We practise an open membership so there is no need for a proposer to sponsor your joining our club. Please see our Downloads page for the application form and our fees are on the form. We welcome new members who wish to enjoy the sport of sailing and enjoy the facilities our club offers. We would strongly advise visiting us before becoming a member. It helps you to get to know about the club better and we can advise you on the best membership type to suit your needs.
